The 3rd generation Mustang's were produced from 1978 to 1993. Built on Fords legendary 'Fox platform', they evolved through a number of sub-models, trim levels, and drivetrain combinations during its production life. It underwent several changes for 1987 and for a time seemed destined for replacement with a front wheel drive Mazda platform before company executives were swayed by overwhelming consumer excitement and demand to keep the 'Fox' body platform. Enthusiasts group the generation into two segments: the initial 1979-1986 cars, with their quad headlight arrangement and the later 1987-1993 cars with their aero composite headlamped front fascia styling. Production ended with the introduction of the 4th generation Mustang for the 1994 model year.
While most of the original 'Fox bodied' Mustang was carried over into late 1982 for the 1983 year, there were some significant changes and improvements on the then five-year-old 'Fox-platform' model. The front end was restyled with a more rounded nose and a V-shaped grille which resulted in the headlamp openings being revised to follow the grille shape and the big news for 1983 was that Ford added a Convertible to the Mustang line up, this mid-year introduction was the first true Mustang convertible in a decade. On the performance front, the 5.0 V8 bumped up to 205 horsepower.
The majority of these convertibles were equipped with the new 3.8 L V6 in GLX form, although 993 5.0L V8 GT models and a few GLX Convertibles were also specially ordered with the 5.0L V8 High Output 205HP engine. The Mustang 5.0L High Output GT received a four-barrel carburetor and a new intake manifold, bringing power to 205 HP. The Mustang GLX models also had dual bright remote-control mirrors, bright rocker panel moldings, woodgrain-insert four-spoke steering wheel, map pockets in the driver's door trim panel, and a light group. GLX Convertibles added power brakes, dual black remote-control mirrors, black rocker moldings, tinted glass, and most were ordered with an automatic transmission.
In summary, you will look long and hard to find a finer looking or driving example of this beautiful and very rare legendary 5.0L V8 GLX Convertible with only 41K original miles for the ultimate and most likely fastest in it's class of all 1980's American muscle cars! These 3rd generation early year 'Fox bodied' models are now starting to prove quite collectible and desirable amongst Mustang enthusiasts - get in early with this fine 5.0L Convertible example with the very desirable 5 speed manual transmission and with only one family owner since new!
