The Chrysler Town and Country epitomized luxury, quality, and the sporting life and by 1948 was the highest price T&C yet! A far cry from the utilitarian options that gave rise to the working Woodies of the 1930s and 1940s, the Town and Country was the vision of the Chrysler Corporation general manager Dave Wallace who championed the idea as a limited-production vehicle to generate showroom traffic. The first Town and Country models were sold in 1941 and 1942, and while production halted with the US entry into WWII, the Town and Country returned for 1946 to 1948 with a low-production sedan and dashing convertible.
Walter P. Chrysler had founded the Chrysler Corporation in 1925, when the Maxwell Motor Company was re-organized into the Chrysler Corporation. The Chrysler was initially a six-cylinder automobile, but Walter steered them towards a full line offering, including everything from trucks to luxury cars. This period of great success earned Chrysler a place at the table in Detroit known as the Big Three. After the abrupt halt of production at the onset of World War II, production was resumed after the war at nearly twice the speed in 1946. The Big Three scrambled to meet the imminent demand of excited new car buyers; however, Chrysler did so with a bit more creative gusto that helped institute immediate demand for some of their new models. The height of luxury at the time was the Town & Country convertible.
One of the most memorable post-war Chryslers ever built, the Town and Country's steel front end was all 'Town' and the White Ash wooden-bodied rear was all 'Country', and these elegant automobiles were equally at home in Manhattan or on your country estate. This particularly fine example is freshly finished in the correct Chrysler Newport Blue, with excellent chrome and trim throughout. The presentation of the car is top shelf from any angle, and the 1948 Town and Country is eligible for CCCA Tours, as it is one of the most elegant and easy to drive Full Classics you can find.
The Chrysler Town & Country was one of the most exciting postwar cars produced. A favorite of celebrities, personalities, and the rich and famous, made it the first choice of the Hollywood crowd. The convertible was the most favored of the Town & Country line with limited production and reportedly possibly fewer than 200 remaining today. The body style was the most memorable of all the Chryslers with its name coming from the combination of the steel front end representing 'Town' and the wood paneled rear portion resembling 'Country'.
This handsome 1948 Town and Country Convertible is presented in perhaps the ideal color combination, as Chryslers 'Newport Blue' is the perfect compliment to the richness of the varnished timbers, which we believe to be original and which are fully restored. The car drives as good as it looks with the semiautomatic transmission functioning smoothly and always shifting predictably at 28 mph. Eligible for numerous concours events and now enjoying Full Classic status with the CCCA, this is a wonderfully versatile and elegant Chrysler an American luxury car worthy of the finest collections and the most memorable drives.
These 1946-48 years are the classic 'T & C' models most enthusiasts and collectors aspire to own. The bodies were framed with white ash, fitted with interlocking miters, and varnished to perfection. Mahogany veneer plywood filled the spaces within the framing. They feature a Spitfire Straight Eight, 323.5 cu. inch engine developing 135 horsepower coupled to a unique fluid drive semi-automatic transmission. This particularly beautiful Town & Country was an incredible all original wood and paint example prior to the painstaking nut and bolt restoration finished in the most striking of color combinations of Newport Blue with a Dark Red leather interior.
The original spare wheel is in it's rightful storage place in the trunk. The 323 8 cylinder engine is extremely strong and powerful and this particular car drives magnificently - must be driven to be fully appreciated - drives straight as an arrow with no strange road wobbles, shakes or rattles.
